The next meeting of the University Branch Library Book Club will take place on Monday, November 19, beginning at 1:30 pm, in the Large Conference Room of the library, located at 14010 University Blvd in Sugar Land, on the UH campus.
The book to be discussed is The Poe Shadow, a novel written by Matthew Pearl. The book club, which normally meets on the 2nd Monday of the month, will meet on a special date this month because of the Veterans’ Day holiday.
The mysterious death of poet/author Edgar Allan Poe provides the basis for this literary historical thriller set in Baltimore in 1849. Quentin Clark is a young lawyer and Poe admirer who is outraged by the disdain with which Poe’s controversial life and death are treated by the media. In defense of the author’s reputation, Clark goes to great lengths to prove the genius and significance of Poe’s talent – and perhaps clues to the circumstances surrounding his final hours. Clark’s quest soon finds him enmeshed in political intrigues, the Baltimore slave trade, and his own trial for murder and insanity.
Anyone interested in meeting with other readers who share the same love for literature and lively discussion is invited to attend. For more information, call the branch library at 281-633-5100 or the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677.
