Vanderbilt University Virtual School develops programs to integrate technology in teaching and learning. It also hopes to build virtual learning communities. The 8th graders at Sartartia Middle School took advantage of the virtual lesson being taught at the school on Thursday, March 3. The lesson entitled- Beyond Anne Frank: Why Study the Holocaust went along with their English lesson on the book- Night by Elie Wiesel.
The lesson examined why we should study the Holocaust and the progression of events leading to the Holocaust. The lesson introduced the SMS students to the initial labeling and classification of Jews through the use of images on the Web. The students also learned about the history and effects of the Holocaust on survivors through the use of videoconferences and actual questions to survivors.
With the help of Vanderbilt Virtual School, SMS made the best use of videoconferencing technology to enhance learning by connecting students and teachers to experts.
