At a recent presentation at the Fort Bend Family YMCA’s outreach program site at Mustang Park Community Center in Fresno, TX, representatives from Wal-Mart presented the YMCAs of Fort Bend County with a check for $40,000 from the Wal-Mart Foundation’s State Giving Program. The Walmart Foundation State Giving Program gift will help subsidize the operations of the seven YMCA Outreach Program Centers in Fort Bend County that are operated by the Fort Bend, TW Davis and Katy YMCA locations. “We are so happy to partner with the YMCA in Fort Bend County to help ensure that children who are most at risk get the attention they need to help them grow and succeed in life,” said Todd Manley, Regional Vice President for Walmart.
During the event presentation, Walmart Executives were given a tour of the program site and heard about the many educational, recreational and health related activities that the YMCA runs at each of the seven outreach program centers. The tour included a demonstration of the youth fitness activities conducted by the YMCA’s CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Child Health) program at the site. The day concluded with the youth of the site presenting the Walmart Executives with special hand-made thank you cards produced by the kids of all of the current outreach sites in Fort Bend County. Eric Schenkelberg, YMCA Group Executive commented “We could not impact the lives of so many kids in Fort Bend County without the support and partnership of organizations like the Walmart Foundation.”
The Fort Bend County YMCA’s outreach program sites were developed over fifteen years ago to ensure that the YMCA’s character building programs and activities could be provided for all youth in the community regardless of their ability to afford the services or access the Y facilities. Thanks to partnerships with community organizations, schools, area churches and Fort Bend County Parks and Recreation facilities, the YMCA is able to provide its youth programming directly in the communities that need it the most. YMCA outreach program services include after school activities, summer camps, youth sports, health and wellness, and educational enhancements. In addition, the program centers provide nutritional opportunities to the youth with healthy snacks and drinks after school and meals in the summer through the Federal Food Program administered by Fort Bend County. Currently, year round programs are running in Needville, Kendleton, Fresno and Four Corners, Texas. Summer programs are run for youth in all the aforementioned locations and in Richmond, Rosenberg and Fulshear, Texas.
