Richmond Police spokesman Master Sergeant Lowell Neinast said Richmond police were called to a fight in progress shortly after midnight, early Tuesday morning, June 5, in the 900 block of Preston Street. When the officers arrived on the scene they learned that Gerald Darnell Francis, 45 and Ryan Clark Ross, 28, both of Richmond, were engaged in a fight.
Neinast said, “During the altercation, Ross was allegedly hit over the head with an object and then attacked Francis.” As a result of the fight, Gerald Francis was taken by air ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston where he was treated for severe head trauma. Once at Hermann Hospital, Francis was put on life support.
As a result of Francis’ injuries, Neinast said Ryan Ross was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault, which is a 2nd degree Felony. Ryan was booked into the Fort Bend County Jail that morning.
The aspects of the case changed early Friday morning, when Gerald Darnell Francis died. Neinast said, “On Friday, June 15, Richmond Detective Mike Hicks received notice from the Harris County Medical Examiner’s (HCME) Office that Gerald Darnell Francis had died at 2:43 am Friday morning.” Francis’ cause of death will be determined by the HCME autopsy.
Neinast went on to explain that Ryan Ross could potentially face a murder charge if the autopsy revealed that Francis’ death was a result of the injuries he sustained in the fight with Ross. At press time the case is slated to be presented to a Fort Bend Grand Jury.
