Sugar Land Town Square recently hosted its 7th annual Sugar Land Superstar Finale, featuring ten pre-selected finalists from Fort Bend County. The popular American Idol-like competition drew thousands to the Plaza of Sugar Land Town Square, where the judges named Lauryn Harris the 2012 Sugar Land Superstar.
Harris impressed the audience and judges with her rendition of Adele’s “Lovesong.” Micaela Garza, who sang an emotional version of “If I’m Not in Love With You” by Faith Hill, finished in second place. For the first time in the history of the competition, the judges awarded a tie for third place to finalists Mason Bynes and Kathleen Nguyen. Bynes sang “Fool That I Am” by Etta James; Nguyen played her guitar and sang an original song.
Superstar Harris won a prize package with items from Sugar Land Town Square retailers and restaurants valued at over $400. The second and third place winners were awarded flowers at the conclusion of the event, and all four performers will have the opportunity to sing at upcoming Town Square events.
The contestants were voted on by a panel of local, celebrity judges, including Tony Bracy, record representative at Capital Records; Sarah Golden, folk singer/songwriter and former contestant on NBC’s The Voice; and Craig DeSerf of David Taylor Cadillac. The judges’ criteria included vocal talent, stage presence, and crowd response. Local radio personality Michele Fisher was the evening’s emcee.
