A Houston man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for his role in the January 2020 auto-pedestrian crash that led to the death of an 81-year-old woman, according to prosecutors.
Marlon Alexander Zavala, 41, of Houston, pleaded guilty to one count of failure to stop and render aid resulting in death and was sentenced as part of a plea agreement, according to prosecutors.
Zavala was driving at about 6 p.m. on Jan. 17, 2020 in the 500 block of Murphy Road in Stafford when he struck Laquetta Booe, 81, of Missouri City, who was crossing the street, Harris County Assistant District Attorney Alison Baimbridge said.
The woman died from her injuries, Baimbridge said. Zavala fled the scene.
A business’ nearby security camera captured the crash, and an eyewitness identified Zavala’s vehicle, according to prosecutors.
Deputies eventually found Zavala and the car in Houston, according to prosecutors.
Zavala will be eligible for parole after serving a fourth of his sentence, according to prosecutors.
