Lamar Consolidated High School Marketing and Career Preparation teacher Sonja Hummel will be recognized Sunday (December 18) at Reliant Stadium as a finalist for the Houston Texans Community Quarterback. Sonja will be on the field as the Texans take on the Carolina Panthers.
Sonja was nominated by Susan Whitacre, Director of Volunteers with Fort Bend Senior’s Meals On Wheels, for being instrumental in creating a cherished annual tradition, The Seniors Senior Prom and for demonstrating just how much fun volunteering can be.
Four years ago Sonja responded to a request by Whitacre to make a wish come true for an 80+ year old, wheelchair-bound Senior in Rosenberg who had never attended a prom and long dreamed of attending one.
Hummel directed almost 40 Lamar students who helped create a story-book transformation of the congregate center, with donations of everything from exquisite table linens, fresh flowers, music, a red carpet and tiaras, to a full sit-down dinner and a limo ride home for the 93-year-old Prom Queen and 91-year-old King.
The Texans partner with the United Way each year to recognize the work done by outstanding volunteers who exemplify leadership, dedication and a commitment to improving their communities.
