While some may have been laying on their couch over the New Year, several of the area’s high school basketball teams produced top performances during holiday tournaments over the break.

The Clements Rangers were the champions of the Hays Hawk Classic in Buda on Dec. 28-29. The Rangers (16-5) swept through both days of the tournament by defeating Austin Bowie (53-36) and Belton (58-49) on Dec. 28, before taking down Buda Johnson 45-44 in the semifinal and Veterans Memorial by a score of 49-46 in the title game on Dec. 29.

Elkins went 2-1 and took third place in the Campbell Division at the VYPE Holiday Invitational on Dec. 28-29. They split a pair of games on Dec. 28, taking down Richmond Foster 72-47 before dropping a 53-52 nailbiter to Houston Westfield – ranked 8th in Class 6A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. The Knights (16-5) then defeated Crosby 73-50 in the third-place game on Dec. 29. Junior guard Chris Johnson was named to the all-tournament team.

The Austin Bulldogs went just 1-2 at the VYPE tournament, but there were still multiple standout performances. Junior Ethan To poured in a season-high 24 points for Austin (10-10) while hitting six three-pointers in a 50-48 loss to Houston Heights on Dec. 28 en route to being named to the all-tournament team. Davion Jackson (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Brian Anunne (12 points, 12 rebounds) both had double-doubles in the Bulldogs’ 60-55 win over Cy-Fair on Dec. 29.

Ridge Point took third place in the Brazosport ISD Holiday Classic by going 3-1 and junior guard T.J. Ford Jr. was named to the Classic’s all-tournament team. The Panthers (13-7) will be back in action Wednesday with a district tilt against Austin.

In Class 5A tournament action, the Hightower Hurricanes went 2-1 at the King Cotton Classic in Pine Bluff, Ark. from Dec. 27-29. Hightower (14-8) lost to Little Rock Parkview 66-63 in the opener on Dec. 27, then beat Chicago De La Salle 63-55 on Dec. 28 and Arkansas White Hall 59-44 on Dec. 29 to finish out the tournament. Aaron Williams led the Hurricanes in scoring during the tournament (18.7 points per game), while Jacory Chatman also had a strong week in averaging 16.3 points per contest.

On the Class 4A front, the Stafford Spartans went 2-2 at the Fort Worth ISD tournament Dec. 27-29. Senior guard Quavious Lilly was named to the All-Tournament team as the Spartans improved to 11-7 overall ahead of Tuesday's scheduled district game against Bay City.

Girls

The Elkins Lady Knights emerged as the champions of the Silver bracket at the Pasadena Holiday Showdown on Dec. 28-29. The Lady Knights (9-11) went 3-1 at the tournament, and will now turn their full focus back on district play with a Wednesday night game against the Bush Lady Broncos.

Ridge Point went 0-3 at the Aggieland Invitational Dec. 27-29, dropping to 7-14 on the season ahead of Wednesday's district matchup against Austin.
