Skeeters De La Cruz

A normally potent Sugar Land Skeeters offense met its kryptonite during the team’s most recent homestand, leading to several close losses in a subpar week.

The Skeeters, who still sat atop the East division of Triple-A West at 26-19 entering play this week, were 2-4 last week while scoring 28 runs in six games. Sugar Land split the final two games of its road trip against the El Paso Chihuahuas before losing three of the first four against the Oklahoma City Dodgers.

However, there were still a few bright spots in the lineup. Outfielder Jake Meyers continued his rampage through Triple-A West by going 12 for 26 with two homers and five RBIs. He led Sugar Land in batting average (.312), slugging (.633), homers (14) and OPS (1.027) entering play this week. Fellow outfielder Bryan De La Cruz was another catalyst, going 9 for 27 with three doubles.

Infielder Michael Papierski also had a strong run last week, going 10 for 20 with four doubles and reaching base in 14 of 24 plate appearances. Jose Siri homered twice and drove in three more runs to give him a team-leading 39 RBIs.

Seth Martinez shined on the mound for Sugar Land last week, picking up a win on June 21 against El Paso. Martinez threw 8.1 innings across two outings, striking out 14 batters against one walk and allowing three hits. Ryan Hartman was also strong on June 25 against Oklahoma City, striking out six Dodgers in 5.1 innings of work while allowing two earned runs.

After finishing up the homestand Tuesday, the Skeeters will begin a six-game road trip against the Round Rock Express from July 1-6.
